IBADAN BUSINESS SCHOOL PARTNERS GOVERNMENT TO PROFER SOLUTION TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Nigerians have been encouraged to develop right and friendly attitude towards the environment.
Speakers at the Innovative Climate Change Programme organized by Ibadan Business School in conjunction with the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) gave the advice in view of the emerging threats to the environment.

The Director General of Dr NCCC Musa Sani Dahiru who was represented by the special assistant  to past vice president Yemi Osibajo on climate change , Mr Olamide Fakujo said collaborative effort of private and government organization was expedient to rescue the nation and the world in general from the looming consequences of environmental degradation resulting from unwholesome human activities.

Speaking on the ripple effects of climate change on the economy, Dr Dahiru emphasized that it was high time the citizens shifted to the  ‘next zero emission’ initiative of the Federal  Government to reduce global warming.

Earlier in his welcome address, the president of Ibadan Business School, Asiwaju Yinka Fasuyi remarked that the school was taking the pioneering roles in combating the challenges of climate change in Nigeria by being the first institute to run innovative climate change solutions programmes in Nigeria, the first institute of learning to wholly go green and the first school to be equipped with the globally renowned experts on climate change.
He explained that as the world continued to experience negative impacts of climate change, governments, organizations and individuals were embracing and promoting environmental sustainability to protect the global ecosystems for the sake of future generation, pledging that IBS will remain in the forefront of the war against environmental degradation.

In her address, the head of Service of Oyo state, mrs Olubunmi Oni described the programme as apt and handy as it would go a long way to address the climatic issue posing dangers to human existence in the world over.

Speaking on the theme for this year’s world day celebration “ Solution to Plastic Pollution”, Mrs. Oni noted that the day as in accordance with the United Nation was to preserve the environment from the damn consequences of the negligence by making use of the available science and solution to tackle the problem of  the environmental pollution caused by anthropogenic activities which release

According to her, Oyo State government is sensitive to issue of climate change and the challenges; this is evident in the recent harmonization of environmental laws by the government to ensure a holistic and squinted legal framework for its operation, administration and easy access to law.

Delivering a paper on the catastrophic effect of climate change of human and aquatic lives, professor Oladele oshibanjo , an international environmental consultant highlighted the consequences of anthropogenic activities to include draught, poverty, rise in sea level, flood, poverty and displacement , harped on the need for Nigerians to have a change of attitude towards the environment to save, the aquatic creatures , wildlife and humans from extinction.

He said the green house effect of burning fossil fuel on the earth temperature was better imagined than experienced, hence the need to key into the shift to the next zero emission initiative of the federal government by adopting alternative energy sources, such as solar power, bioenergy and use of biodegradable materials instead of non degradable pollutants and stop gas flaring as well as deforestation.
In their good will messages, the former Vice Chancellor of Caleb University, Lagos, professor Rotimi Tayo, the former Vice Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, professor Sulaiman Gbadegesin , the permanent representative of Nigeria to ECOWAS Commission, ambassador Musa Nuhu and  an international business consultant, Dr Mrs. Olubisi Fasuyi expressed worries over the effect on climate change on food production , urging the citizenry to desist from behaviors that endanger the environment.

Speaking on the opportunities derivable from the seemingly catastrophic effects of climate change, the Managing Director of SMEFUNDS capital, Canada, Dr Jubril Adeojo pointed out the economic potentials of   carbon market, stressing that African continent lags behind in the global efforts at converting the treats of the global warming on the environment to wealth.

Dr Adeojo advocated massive media campaign on carbon market to enable Africans tap into the initiative and earn carbon credit for the continent to fast track development.

Looking at the theme of the world environment day from a legal angle, Barrister Huzi Msheila blamed the high level of environmental degradation in the country on lack of political will on the part of government to prosecute the offenders.
